Siquijor, Philippines — Waterfalls, folk healers and the most relaxed island in the Visayas.

Central Visayas · Must visit

Siquijor

Waterfalls, folk healers and the most relaxed island in the Visayas.

Long known across the country for folk healing, Siquijor is now a scooter island of clear water, cliff jumps and the Cambugahay Falls. It is small enough to circle in a single day and calm enough to justify staying a week doing very little.

Why visit

  • One of the few islands in the Philippines you can fully explore on a rented scooter in a day
  • Cambugahay Falls is among the most photogenic waterfalls in the Visayas and rarely crowded before mid-morning
  • A genuinely slower pace than Bohol or Cebu, ideal after a busier leg of a trip
  • Good value accommodation across the whole island, even in high season
  • Easy ferry connections to both Dumaguete and Bohol for onward travel

Highlights

  • Cambugahay Falls before 08:00, with the rope swing to yourself
  • Salagdoong Beach cliff jumps, two platforms of different heights
  • The century-old balete tree with fish spa pool at its base
  • Sunset at Paliton Beach, one of the least developed beaches in the Visayas

Getting there

  • Dumaguete to Siquijor: 1h by ferry, several daily departures
  • Bohol (Tagbilaran) to Siquijor: 2h by ferry, limited days, check the schedule before booking flights
  • Cebu to Dumaguete: 1h flight, then the ferry connection to Siquijor

My personal recommendation

Ferry schedules here change without notice, especially between Siquijor and Bohol. I always keep one buffer night after Siquijor before any international flight or tight onward connection.

Best beaches

  • Paliton Beach

White sand, minimal development, best at sunset.

  • Salagdoong Beach

Known for cliff jumping platforms, calm swimming cove alongside.

  • Solangon Beach

A quieter local beach near San Juan, good for a lazy afternoon.

Where to sleep: my inspected hotels

I circle the island by scooter on every visit to check current ferry timings against the posted schedule, since these change seasonally without much notice online.

Luxury

  • Coco Grove Beach Resort

    San Juan

The most developed resort on the island, spacious grounds and a proper pool; still modest by regional luxury standards.

  • Islas Chalet Beach Resort

    Coco Beach area

Boutique-style rooms with a private beach frontage, quieter than Coco Grove.

Mid-range

  • Casa de la Playa

    San Juan

Simple, well-kept beachfront cottages, popular with returning travellers.

  • Kermit Surf Resort

    Paliton area

Small, relaxed property near a quiet beach, good restaurant on site.

Budget

  • Charisma Beach Resort

    San Juan

Basic beachfront rooms, honest pricing, good scooter rental desk.

  • Blue Ocean Ville

    San Juan area

Budget rooms a short walk from the beach, popular with backpackers.

Best restaurants

  • Sarai's Restaurant

San Juan spot with a broad menu, useful after a day of scootering.

  • Kermit Beach Restaurant

Good seafood on a quiet beach, popular at sunset.

  • Bounty Beach Grill

Simple grilled dishes at fair prices, a local favourite.

Best activities

  • Cambugahay Falls swimming and rope swing

Go before 08:00 for empty pools and the best light for photos.

  • Cliff jumping at Salagdoong

Two platforms, seven and ten metres; check with staff before jumping in low tide.

  • Full-island scooter loop

The coastal road circles the island in about three hours without stops.

  • Fish spa at the balete tree

A quick, quirky stop combined with the tree's cool shade.

Hidden places

  • Bandila-an Nature Park

A hilltop park with a small cave system and butterfly sanctuary, rarely visited.

  • Lugnason Falls

A smaller, less crowded waterfall than Cambugahay, near Lazi.

  • Cang-Isok House

A century-old ancestral house in Lazi, a quiet stop for history over beach time.

Common mistakes

Not confirming the Bohol-Siquijor ferry days before flying

This route runs limited days per week; check before locking in flight dates.

Visiting Cambugahay Falls at midday

Tour groups arrive from 10:00 onward; go before 08:00 instead.

Treating Siquijor as a one-night stopover

Three nights lets you actually slow down, which is the entire point of the island.

Skipping travel insurance for scooter rental

Roads are decent but rental bikes are basic; confirm your insurance covers scooter accidents.

Booking a tight connection right after leaving the island

Ferry cancellations for weather are common enough to need a buffer day.

Recommended length of stay

Three nights is enough to see the whole island slowly, with time left over to simply do nothing on the beach.

Perfect itinerary combinations

  • Siquijor + Bohol

Ferry connection from Tagbilaran makes this a natural, low-stress pairing.

  • Siquijor + Cebu via Dumaguete

Fly into Dumaguete, ferry to Siquijor, then connect back to Cebu for onward travel.

  • Siquijor slow-travel finish

Use it as the last stop of a Visayas trip, three nights of true rest before flying home.
