Northern Cebu · Expert recommendation
Bantayan Island
The white-sand island Cebuanos keep for themselves.
Bantayan is where Cebu families go for their own holidays, and it shows: long white beaches, laid-back fishing towns, and none of the mass-market resort strips you find elsewhere. It's flat, easy to scooter around, and the sunsets over the Visayan Sea rival anywhere in the country.
Why visit
- Long, genuinely white sand beaches without the resort density of Boracay
- A real working island, not built purely for tourism
- Easy, flat scooter roads for exploring end to end
- Excellent sunsets, uninterrupted horizon over the Visayan Sea
- Good value compared to Cebu's southwest coast
Highlights
- Sugar Beach and Kota Beach, both wide white sand stretches
- Virgin Island sandbar, boat trip from Santa Fe
- Ogtong Cave, a natural swimming pool near Santa Fe
- Sunset drinks along the Santa Fe beachfront
- Madridejos fish market at dawn, still very much a working fishing town
Getting there
- Mactan-Cebu Airport to Hagnaya port: 3h by van
- Hagnaya port to Santa Fe, Bantayan: 1h ferry
- Santa Fe port to your hotel: 10-20 min by tricycle or habal-habal
My personal recommendation
I never book the ferry same-day as an international flight out of Cebu — sea conditions occasionally delay the Hagnaya crossing and there's no fast alternative.

Sugar Beach
Wide, soft sand, the most photogenic stretch near Santa Fe.
Kota Beach
Popular with locals on weekends, decent beachfront bars.
Virgin Island
A sandbar reached by 30-40 min boat, good for a half-day trip.

I've stayed in Santa Fe three times and personally checked every hotel listed above, including the budget options in Madridejos.

Full circuit takes about 2 hours, flat and easy roads.
Sunset at Santa Fe beachfront
Grab a beer and a table on the sand by 5:30pm.
Hidden places

Booking the ferry same-day as a flight
Weather delays happen; always keep a buffer day before flying out.
Staying in Bantayan town instead of Santa Fe
Santa Fe has the beaches; the town is 45 minutes away and less convenient.
Skipping Madridejos entirely
It's the most authentic part of the island and worth a morning visit.
Expecting nightlife
This is a quiet island — good for rest, not for going out.
Recommended length of stay
3 nights is ideal for the beaches plus one boat trip.
Perfect itinerary combinations
Bantayan Island + Moalboal
Both reachable via Cebu, pairs relaxation with diving and canyoneering.
Bantayan Island + Cebu City
Easy add-on before flying out, 3h transfer each way.
Bantayan Island + Camiguin
For travellers wanting two quieter, less commercial islands back to back.
