Moalboal
A sardine tornado you can reach by swimming straight off the beach.
Moalboal is unique in the Philippines: the famous sardine run sits just 20 metres off Panagsama Beach, so you can snorkel it without a boat. It's grown a lot in the last decade — it's no longer a secret — but it's still the easiest big marine spectacle to reach in the country, and the canyoneering at Kawasan Falls is 45 minutes away.

Getting there
- Mactan-Cebu Airport (CEB) to Moalboal: 2h30-3h by private van or shared shuttle
- Cebu City to Moalboal: 3h by bus from South Bus Terminal
- Combine with Kawasan Falls (Badian): 30-45 min further south by tricycle or van
My personal recommendation
Everyone books canyoneering as a rushed half-day add-on. I always schedule it as its own day with an early 7am start — you finish before the afternoon tour groups arrive and the water is clearer.
Best beaches
Panagsama Beach
Rocky entry but this is where the sardine run sits, right offshore.
White Beach
Actual sand beach, 15 min south, better for lounging and sunset.
Basdaku (also called White Beach)
Quieter stretch, good sunset bars, less crowded than Panagsama.

Snorkelling the sardine run mid-afternoon
Boat traffic churns up sediment; mornings are far clearer.
Doing canyoneering as a rushed add-on
Give it a full day — rushing it means missing the best jumps.
Skipping reef-safe sunscreen
The house reef is fragile and heavily used; it matters here more than most places.
Assuming Panagsama has a proper beach
It's mostly rocky; go to White Beach if you want classic sand.
Not booking dive shops in advance during peak season
January-March fills up fast, especially for freediving courses.
Recommended length of stay
3 nights covers the sardine run, one dive day and canyoneering.

Both in Cebu, easy 2-3h transfer, pairs adventure diving with total relaxation.
