Camiguin

A volcanic island of seven cones, cold springs and a sunken cemetery.

Camiguin is the island I send clients to when they say they've 'already seen the Philippines.' It's tiny — you can drive the coastal ring road in under three hours — but it packs seven volcanoes, a graveyard swallowed by the sea, and some of the friendliest small-town welcomes I've found anywhere in the country. Almost no mass tourism, and the roads are excellent.

Getting there

Cebu or Manila to Camiguin (CGM) airport: 1h direct flight, several weeks a week only
Cagayan de Oro (CDO) to Balingoan port: 1h30 by van
Balingoan to Benoni port, Camiguin: 1h ferry (roll-on roll-off, runs hourly in daylight)
Benoni to your hotel: 15-40 min by tricycle or habal-habal depending on which coast

My personal recommendation

I book White Island at 5:30am, not 8am like every tour operator sells it. You get the sandbar to yourself for a good 40 minutes and the light is better for photos anyway.

White Island
A sandbar with no vegetation, 20 min boat ride off Yumbing. Go at sunrise.
Mantigue Island
A small forested island with a proper beach and decent snorkelling, entry fee covers the boat co-op.
Agoho black sand beach
Not for swimming, but the sunset here with Mount Hibok-Hibok behind you is the best on the island.

Skipping travel insurance for the ferry crossing

The Balingoan-Benoni RORO occasionally cancels in rough weather; build in a buffer day.

Renting a scooter without checking brakes

The coastal road has steep sections near Mahinog; test the bike before you pay.

Only doing a day trip from CDO

It technically works but you'll spend more time in transit than on the island.

If you're here in October, the Lanzones Festival is genuinely worth timing your trip around.
