Burgos (Southern Leyte), Philippines — Sogod Bay's dive base, quietly excellent and completely uncrowded.

Southern Leyte · Hidden gem

Burgos (Southern Leyte)

Sogod Bay's dive base, quietly excellent and completely uncrowded.

Padre Burgos is Southern Leyte's dive hub, a scattering of small resorts along Sogod Bay's western shore facing a wall that drops straight into deep, current-fed water. It has none of the infrastructure of the bigger dive destinations, which is exactly its appeal: two dozen dive sites, almost no other divers, and boats that leave when you're ready rather than on a fixed schedule.

Why visit

  • Genuine wall and current diving without Moalboal or Malapascua's crowds
  • Easy pairing with Pintuyan's whale sharks, 40 minutes north
  • Resort owners who dive the sites themselves and know current conditions daily
  • A real off-grid slowdown, with just enough infrastructure to stay comfortable

Highlights

  • Napantao Marine Sanctuary and its coral wall
  • Cathedral dive site's dramatic swim-throughs
  • Sogod Bay whale shark season from the same base as Pintuyan
  • Padre Burgos' unhurried resort-hopping by boat
  • Southern Leyte's quiet coastal road on a scooter

Getting there

  • Cebu City to Maasin (Southern Leyte): 1h flight, 3x weekly
  • Maasin to Padre Burgos: 30 minutes by van or tricycle
  • Alternative: Ormoc (Leyte) to Maasin by van, 3h, then 30 minutes to Burgos
  • Most dive resorts arrange airport pickup if booked in advance

My personal recommendation

This is where I send divers who complain that Moalboal is too busy in high season. The reefs are as healthy, the boats are yours alone, and dinner conversation happens with the resort owner rather than forty strangers.

Best beaches

  • Padre Burgos resort beaches

Mostly narrow and rocky, built for boat access rather than sunbathing — come for the water beneath the surface, not above it.

  • Consuelo cove

A short boat ride south, calmer for a swim between dives.

Where to sleep: my inspected hotels

I stayed at two of these resorts across a five-day trip specifically to compare boat operations and dive briefings before recommending Sogod Bay to clients.

Luxury

  • Southern Leyte Divers Resort

    Padre Burgos

The most polished option on this stretch, private cottages and a house reef, still modest by national standards but the best of what exists here.

Mid-range

  • Peter's Dive Resort

    Padre Burgos

Long-running German-run dive operation, simple comfortable rooms, reliable boats and Nitrox on site.

Budget

  • Basic beachfront cottages, Padre Burgos

    Padre Burgos town

Fan rooms attached to smaller dive shops, ask locally rather than booking online.

Best restaurants

  • Resort dining rooms

Most divers eat where they sleep; the food is home-style Filipino, arranged around boat schedules.

  • Maasin's public market

For a change of scene and cheap fresh seafood, 30 minutes away.

Best activities

  • Two-tank morning dive trips

Cathedral, Napantao and Cornerstone are the standard rotation, arranged the night before with your resort.

  • Whale shark day trip to Pintuyan

40 minutes by van, arranged through your dive resort in season.

  • Freediving and snorkelling off the house reefs

No boat needed at several resorts, good for a rest day between dives.

  • Southern Leyte coastal scooter ride

Quiet, scenic, and largely traffic-free outside Maasin town.

Hidden places

  • Consuelo cove

A short boat hop most divers never bother with, worth an afternoon between dive trips.

  • Limasawa Island add-on

Historically significant and rarely visited, reachable via a short boat charter from Padre Burgos or Pintuyan.

Common mistakes

Treating it as a beach holiday

The beaches are workmanlike; this is a diving base first, come for the reefs.

Not booking Nitrox in advance

Only a couple of operators fill Nitrox tanks, and stock runs out on busy weekends.

Skipping the whale shark day trip

Pairing Burgos with Pintuyan costs almost nothing extra in transfer time and adds a completely different experience.

Arriving without cash

There are no ATMs in Padre Burgos itself; withdraw in Maasin before heading down.

Diving in April-May without checking currents

Some sites get strong currents late in the dry season — brief with your dive master, don't assume calm water year-round.

Recommended length of stay

3 nights: enough for six dives plus one whale shark day trip to Pintuyan.

Perfect itinerary combinations

  • Burgos + Pintuyan

40 minutes apart, the natural whale shark and wall diving double-header of Southern Leyte.

  • Burgos + Malapascua

For divers wanting to contrast a quiet wall with Malapascua's thresher shark dives, connect via Cebu.

  • Burgos + Bohol

Ferry and flight connections via Cebu make it easy to add Bohol's tarsiers and Chocolate Hills after the diving leg.
