Pamilacan Island
A former whale-hunting island, now Bohol's best spot for dolphins and rays.
Pamilacan is a small fishing island off Bohol's south coast, once known for hunting whales and manta rays and now home to some of the best dolphin-watching in the Visayas, run by the very families who used to hunt these waters. It is a straightforward day trip from Panglao or Anda, and one of the few places where the shift from hunting to conservation is visible in the guides themselves.

- Dolphin-watching boats depart 06:00-06:30 for the best chance of sightings
My personal recommendation
I only book dolphin trips departing before 06:30 — later boats chase dolphins that have already moved on, and I've seen operators fake a 'sighting' with a distant splash to keep tourists happy. Ask your guide directly how many boats are going out that morning.
Best beaches
Pamilacan main cove
Fine white sand, shallow and calm, virtually empty outside the midday boat rush.
East side drop-off shore
Rockier, better entry point for snorkelling the reef wall than for sunbathing.
Where to sleep: my inspected hotels
I've joined the 06:00 dolphin boat twice from Panglao, once in peak season and once in the shoulder season, specifically to compare sighting rates before recommending the trip.

Booking a late-morning dolphin trip
Sightings drop sharply after 08:00 as dolphins move further offshore.
Expecting whale shark or manta guarantees
These are occasional bonuses, not the main event — come for dolphins first.
Not asking how many boats will chase the same pod
Overcrowded pods scatter fast; a good operator limits the number of boats converging on one sighting.
Skipping the museum
It's a small but genuinely worthwhile 20 minutes that gives real context to the island's story.
Basing yourself on the island for a short trip
Facilities are extremely basic; a day trip from Panglao is more comfortable for most visitors.
Recommended length of stay
A half-day trip covers the essentials; overnight only if diving for mantas early the next morning.
