Limasawa Island
Where the first Catholic mass in the Philippines was held, still barely visited.
Limasawa is a small, hilly island off the southern tip of Leyte, historically significant as the site of the first Mass in the Philippines in 1521 and now almost entirely overlooked by tourism. There is one small town, a handful of coves, and a marker commemorating Magellan's landing — I have never seen more than a dozen other visitors on any of my three trips there.

- Cebu City to Maasin (Southern Leyte): 1h flight, 3x weekly
- Maasin or Padre Burgos to Limasawa: 45 minutes to 1h by chartered outrigger boat
- Alternative: Pintuyan to Limasawa, roughly 45 minutes, combine with a whale shark morning
- No scheduled public ferry — every visit means chartering a boat directly at the pier
My personal recommendation
There is no resort here and no restaurant guaranteed to be open — I bring my own packed lunch and confirm my boatman's return time before we even leave the pier, because there is no other way back.
Best beaches
Triangulo cove
The best swimming spot on the island, calm and shallow, bring your own shade.
Landing site cove
Rocky rather than sandy, historically significant, better for photos than swimming.

I chartered a boat from Padre Burgos on a day trip and returned a second time from Pintuyan to check both approach routes before recommending either to clients.
