Maosonon Island

A blink-and-you-miss-it sandbar island off Padre Burgos, ours alone most mornings.

Maosonon is a tiny wooded island a short boat ride from Padre Burgos, ringed by a narrow white sand beach and reef, used more by local dive resorts as a between-dive stop than as a destination in its own right. On my visits I've had it entirely to myself outside of a single dive group — there is no village, no facilities, just sand, trees and clear water.

Why visit

  • One of the emptiest beach stops in a region already short on tourists
  • A natural half-day pairing with Padre Burgos diving
  • Excellent for photos with genuinely nobody else in frame
  • Simple, cheap boat access from an established dive base

Highlights

  • A short, uncrowded white sand beach circling the island
  • Clear shallow water good for snorkelling right off the sand
  • A quiet lunch stop between Sogod Bay dives
  • Genuine isolation just minutes from a dive resort

Getting there

  • Cebu City to Maasin (Southern Leyte): 1h flight, 3x weekly
  • Maasin to Padre Burgos: 30 minutes by van
  • Padre Burgos to Maosonon Island: 15 to 20 minutes by chartered outrigger boat
  • Arrange the boat through your Padre Burgos resort a day in advance

My personal recommendation

There is nothing to 'do' here beyond swim, walk the beach and eat a packed lunch — which is precisely why I send burnt-out clients here for a half day between busier stops in Southern Leyte.

Best beaches

  • Maosonon main beach

A narrow ring of white sand around the island, shallow entry, no shade structures so bring your own.

Where to sleep: my inspected hotels

I've stopped here twice during dive-resort visits to Padre Burgos, both times finding it essentially empty outside a single other dive group.

Luxury

  • Southern Leyte Divers Resort, Padre Burgos

Padre Burgos (mainland base, 15-20 min away)

No accommodation exists on Maosonon; this is the comfortable base most visitors use before a day trip out.

Mid-range

  • Peter's Dive Resort, Padre Burgos

    Padre Burgos

Arrange your Maosonon boat trip directly through the dive desk here.

Budget

  • Basic beachfront cottages, Padre Burgos

    Padre Burgos town

The realistic budget base for anyone visiting Maosonon on a tight budget.

Best restaurants

  • Padre Burgos resort kitchens

Pack a lunch here before heading out, since Maosonon has no food available at all.

Best activities

  • Beach walk around the island

Takes under 15 minutes, best done slowly with nowhere else to be.

  • Snorkelling off the beach

Shallow, clear water — bring your own gear or rent in Padre Burgos.

  • Combine with a Sogod Bay dive day

Most visitors add this as a lunch stop between two dives.

Hidden places

  • The far side of the island, away from the usual boat landing

A five-minute walk for total privacy even if another boat arrives.

Common mistakes

Expecting facilities of any kind

There is no shade structure, no toilet, no food — plan accordingly.

Not bringing your own water and lunch

Nothing is available on the island itself.

Treating it as a full-day destination

It's a wonderful few hours, not a place to spend an entire day without other activities nearby.

Skipping sun protection

There's limited natural shade; bring a hat, sunscreen and a light cover-up.

Recommended length of stay

A few hours to half a day, best combined with Padre Burgos diving.

Perfect itinerary combinations

  • Maosonon + Padre Burgos diving

The natural pairing, a relaxed surface interval spot between dives.

  • Maosonon + Pintuyan whale sharks

Add this quiet stop the day after or before your whale shark morning.

  • Maosonon + Limasawa Island

Both reachable from the same stretch of coast for a varied two-stop day.
